WASHINGTON, DC (WBTV) - Concord Mayor Scott Padgett met with Representative Larry Kissell on Wednesday while in Washington, D.C. for a series of meetings with Federal officials.

The two men met at Kissell's office for a discussion on local economic development priorities and other city improvement projects.

“It’s so important that we embrace the ideas and continued leadership of our local officials as we work to shape our path to economic recovery,” said Kissell. “When we work together, we work best.  The folks in Concord are always ready to get to work to do what it takes to make sure our folks back home have the assistance they need.”

DNC shortened to 3 days, Obama to accept nomination at B of A stadium

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The 2012 Democratic National Convention, which is slated to be held in Charlotte in September, will be shortened from the traditional four days to just three.

"We are shortening the convention program from the traditional four days to three," Democratic National Convention Committee CEO Steve Kerrigan stated on Tuesday, "to make room for a day to organize and celebrate the Carolinas, Virginia and the South."

The convention is slated to open on Labor Day at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, in Concord.

The committee plans to dedicating Monday, September 3rd to families and the community hosting the convention. They believe this will help show the world "what we can do when we out-innovate, out-educate and out-build the rest of the world and build an economy that creates opportunity for all."

President Obama is slated to take the stage at Bank of America Stadium on the final day of the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

CONCORD (NC Metro Mayors Coalition) - Concord Mayor Scott Padgett was recently elected vice chairman of the N.C. Metropolitan Mayors Coalition, a group of mayors committed to promoting policies that support the state’s urban centers. 

Founded in 2001, the Coalition represents 27 of the state’s largest cities.  Its member mayors work together to develop strategies at both the state and national levels to foster vibrant, livable cities that drive growth and innovation for the state. 

Specifically, the group is focused on economic development, transportation and public safety.

CONCORD – In observance of Christmas, City of Concord offices will be closed on Monday, December 26 and Tuesday, December 27.

Garbage, recycling, and bulky waste collection by Waste Pro will operate on a one day delay next week, with Monday’s items collected on Tuesday, and Friday’s items collected on Saturday.

During the week following Christmas and the week following New Year’s Day, extra recyclables may be placed in clear plastic bags beside your black cart for collection.  Remember, paper gift wrap, gift boxes, and gift bags are recyclable items.  For more information about how to have a greener holiday season, see page six of the Winter 2012 Concord City Circular.

President Obama heads to Ft. Bragg, speaks to troops Wednesday

FORT BRAGG, NC (WBTV/AP) - President Barack Obama will make a stop at Ft. Bragg Wednesday, joining a military community that has seen its soldiers repeatedly deployed to Iraq. Mr. Obama will talk to troops who've recently returned while thanking all forces who fought during the nearly nine year long war.

"We've given the Iraqis an opportunity to have a democracy and be successful its now time for us to bring all of our troops home," Obama told CBS affiliate KIRO-TV in Seattle.

The President and First Lady Michelle Obama will pay tribute to the troops who served and to their families, and focus a message on making sure returning soldiers have the resources they need to get jobs and educations.

LANDIS - North Carolina Representative Fred Steen, II, announced today that he will be running for the Republican nomination in the 8th Congressional District.

Steen is a native of Landis.  He announced his run during a 10 a.m. press conference at Landis Town Hall.

DNCC launches statewide community outreach program

CHARLOTTE - The Democratic National Convention Committee today announced that it will launch a community outreach campaign that will touch all 100 North Carolina Counties, engaging citizens in the convention planning process. 

During the months of January and February, the DNCC Intergovernmental Affairs and Outreach team will spend time across the state talking to community leaders, citizens and elected officials to identify 100 Convention Community Organizers (CCOs), who will serve as ambassadors to the convention in their counties and communities across the state.

“With the 100 County Plan, we hope to engage a Convention Community Organizer (CCO) from each county in the state and  gather ideas to help ensure that this Convention is truly representative of the state of North Carolina, and reflective of the ideas of its citizens,” stated Steve Kerrigan, DNCC CEO.
