The Villas at Logan Gardens to open

CONCORD - The Villas at Logan Gardens, a brand new apartment home community for senior citizens, is completed and open for residents to move in.

The community was created by a public-private partnership between Douglas Development, LLC, Halcon Development, LLC, the City of Concord, and the NC Housing Finance Agency.  The partners are holding a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new community on August 11, 2011 at 12:00 noon.

The 44-unit apartment home community was built for seniors 62 and older with incomes less than 50 percent of the median area income. The apartments are located at 210 Booker Drive, in Concord, near the Logan Multi-Purpose Center. The one-bedroom units will rent for $645 and the two-bedroom units will rent for $726.

The community was built with an allocation of $355,586 of City of Concord HOME funds. Additionally, Douglas Development received approximately $3.4 million in exchange funds and loans from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, as well as $1 million in conventional financing through the Community Investment Corporation of the Carolinas, a coalition of NC banks.  The total cost of the project was approximately $4.8 million.

It’s a good time to sell your old gold

It’s a good time to sell your old gold

As financial trouble continues on Wall Street, more and more people are looking to invest or sell gold.

Bernadette Faulkner is selling her gold to make a little extra cash.

"I've got some that I wear, but I quit wearing jewelry period," said Faulkner

She brought in three zip lock baggies full of jewelry to Allison Love's Fine Jewelry in Rock Hill Tuesday.

"It's a bunch of junk isn't it?" said Faulkner "But I'm sure it's worth something probably worth more now than when I started collecting ten years ago."

Allison Love says now is a perfect time to sell your gold.

"Gold is at an all time high its $1,729 dollars an ounce it's the highest it's ever been," said Love. "It's a great time to bring it in to see what you can get for it."

Love says not everything in your jewelry box that looks gold is gold.  The best thing to do is to bring it to a reputable jeweler to test it for you.

“It has been my honor to serve the people of Cabarrus County for the past eleven years in Raleigh,” Barnhart said.  “However, the time has come for me to step aside and allow someone else the opportunity to serve our county.  It has been a wonderful experience and I cherish the many friends I have made through my years of public service.”

N.C. troopers ticketing more drivers for texting while driving

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Let's be honest: most of us have probably done it before. Texting while we drive. We know it's dangerous, but we do it anyway. Especially if we can do without even looking at our phone.

But it's that line of thinking that has Trooper Ben Miller with the North Carolina Highway Patrol worried that drivers don't really understand just how dangerous it is.

"It's just as dangerous as drunk driving and speeding," he pointed out. "You're still taking your focus off the road where it should be."

WBTV rode along with Trooper Miller Monday night -- on the lookout for drivers texting and driving.

While we saw plenty of folks talking on their phones, very few were texting while driving.

Until we rode past Lucy Muhira who looked like she was texting and driving. Turns out Lucy was just checking her GPS -- not technically texting -- but the recent college grad admits she's done it before.
